For this week, I interviewed Brandon Buie, a Pro Series-licensed driver who has been on iRacing since December of 2012. Brandon has been sim racing since the days of NASCAR Racing 2, over a decade ago.
Based on his iRacing statistics, it’s safe to assume he learned a thing or two about sim racing from playing NASCAR Racing 2. His first win came on December 5th, 2012 — four days after he joined iRacing — in a Legends car at South Boston Speedway. Since then, he hasn’t stopped winning. In 820 oval starts in two and a half years on iRacing, he has visited victory lane 113 times and has finished in the top five 405 times. In 128 road starts, he has won 12 races and has finished in the top five over 50% of the time. With an oval iRating of over 6300, you wouldn’t want to mess with Brandon on the track, and I got the chance to talk to this pro driver about his iRacing career and learn some interesting facts about him in this week’s Get to Know…
Q: How long have you been sim-racing?
A: I’ve been sim-racing since 1996. First NASCAR sim game was NASCAR Racing 2.
Q: How did you get started in iRacing?
A: I was introduced to iRacing from my teammate Brandon Wright. We were playing Forza 4 at the time and needed a new challenge
Q: Which race car driver do you look up to the most?
A: Well I actually look up to the whole Hendrick Motorsports team. The organization as a whole has accomplished so much and still continues to be the best organization. But if I were to pick one driver it would be Kasey Kahne.
Q: What type of hobbies do you do outside of iRacing?
A: Outside of iRacing I’m usually going to car shows or working on my car.
Q: What is your greatest accomplishment on iRacing
A: Greatest accomplishment on iRacing was making it to the pro series.
Q: What are three things you hope to accomplish in 2013 on iRacing?
A: Win NASCAR iRacing class B and A championship. Also, qualifying for the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship.
“I’m older then more then half of the iRacers on here, I used to live in Osaka, Japan, and I used to be a huge Kyle Busch fan.”
Q: What type of racing do you like to watch on TV?
A: I watch all different types of racing. NASCAR, motocross, NHRA, etc. If it goes fast I’m usually watching it.
Q: How do you think your fellow iRacers see you?
A: I think the majority of iRacers see me as a fair driver who tries to stay out of trouble and just finish clean.
Q: What are three things that people on iRacing probably don’t know about you?
A: Three things that iRacer’s don’t know about me would be that I’m older then more then half of the iRacers on here, I used to live in Osaka, Japan, and I used to be a huge Kyle Busch fan.
Q: If you could go back and change one race in your career what would it be?
A: One race I wish I could change was last season in the A car at Chicagoland Speedway. With fifteen laps to go a caution comes out and I stay out. Finished second but I really felt I could have won if I had fresh tires.
Q: If there was one thing you could change about iRacing, what would it be?
A: I would change how fast iRacers can move up in licenses.
Q: What is one thing that you love the most about iRacing?
A: The competitiveness is like no other sim I have ever played.
Q: Overall, how do you rate your success on iRacing?
A: Seven out of 10 is what I would rate myself. I still have a lot to learn.
