Nissan set to unveil Garage 56 entry

Nissan will unveil a mock-up of its Garage 56 experimental racer for the 2014 Le Mans 24 Hours next week.

The Japanese manufacturer will reveal details of the Garage 56 project, which was announced in February, on Friday ahead of this year’s 24 Hours.

It had only previously said that the car would be “a pioneering Nissan race car showcasing electric technology”.

It was also stated by Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn at the announcement in Japan that the car would be a zero-emissions racer, but this is now known not to be the case.

It is understood that the Nissan Garage 56 car, which follows on from last year’s DeltaWing project (pictured), will have a small-capacity internal combustion engine that will help charge its batteries.

One solution known to have been investigated is driving each wheel with its own electric motor.

Ben Bowlby, the architect of the DeltaWing, is involved in the project, as is the British RML team, which built the direct-injection engine for last year’s car and ran the car at Le Mans.

Nissan will also talk about its hopes of joining the LMP1 division in the future using the technology it will pioneer in the Garage 56 racer.
