Pirelli trusts teams will accept new tyre

Pirelli tyresPirelli is confident that Formula 1 teams will accept the introduction of its modified 2013 tyres for the British Grand Prix.

The new rear tyres will feature the same compounds, but with the construction changed by the replacement of the existing steel belt with a kevlar one, as used last year.

The new tyres are designed to tackle the problems experienced in the Bahrain and Spanish GP weekends

Teams will each be given two sets of the new rubber for evaluation during Friday practice for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.

“That [the practice running] allows the teams to understand if there are any changes to setup and balance,” said Pirelli motorsport boss Paul Hembery.

“We will then take the tyres to Silverstone.”

“The indications we have from the teams is that they accept that we need to make a change and that they are favourable,” said Hembery.

“Clearly, some would like a bigger change, some would like no change, but they do understand we do need to resolve the delamination issue and we believe we have a solution that minimises the change to the performance of the current tyre.

He later added: “At the moment, it looks like there is unanimous agreement.”

The new rear tyres are expected to operate 5-10 degrees cooler than the current ones, but there will be no change to their shape.

Pirelli has admitted this could also lead to a slight increase in the durability of the rear tyres.

While it was initially keen to race the tyres in Canada, Hembery accepts that the teams were within their rights to demand that the new rubber was tried before been given the green-light for introduction.

“They [the teams] did ask to have the opportunity to test before we introduced [the new tyres],” said Hembery.

“We were quite confident because it is something we have used in the last two seasons as a belt pack, it’s something we know will work.

“However, they are quite right it does give them an opportunity to test in Canada before we take them through to Silverstone.”
