Rockenfeller not thinking of title yet

Mike RockenfellerMike Rockenfeller says he is not even daring to dream about becoming DTM champion, despite increasing his points advantage with his Russian win.

The Phoenix Racing driver beat fellow Audi man Mattias Ekstrom at Moscow Raceway last weekend while main title rival Bruno Spengler finished 19th after being spun by Miguel Molina early in the race.

Rockenfeller’s championship lead was increased from just two points to 27 – the equivalent of a win and a ninth place – as a result.

But the German, who has scored points in every race this year and only once finished outside the top five, pointed to recent DTM history as a reason for keeping expectations in check.

Gary Paffett led Spengler by 20 points at this stage of last year’s championship and lost the title at the final race.

In 2010 it was Spengler who let an 11-point advantage – the equivalent of 28 points under the scoring system introduced last year – slip and allowed Paul di Resta to become champion.

“Everybody dreams of being the champion,” Rockenfeller said. “But for me I still look at the situation as having four races to go and we saw last year how things can change.

“From the start of the year I was focused on trying to win the championship and nothing has changed for me. I just have to keep scoring points.”

Paffett lies third in the championship, but is 37 points behind Rockenfeller and 10 adrift of Spengler.

Four races remain with 100 points available.
