Stewart breaks leg in sprint car crash

Tony Stewart NASCAR 2013Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart will miss the forthcoming Watkins Glen event after breaking his leg in a sprint car crash.

The Stewart-Haas driver sustained a broken right tibia and fibula in a multiple-car incident at Southern Iowa Speedway. He was reportedly alert and talking with the medics while he was transported via ambulance to hospital.

Stewart currently leads the race for the first wild card entry into this year’s Sprint Cup Chase, which will be set in five races time.

He currently sits 11th in the points and has claimed one victory, at Dover.

It is not yet known how long Stewart, who has won five times previously at Watkins Glen, will be out for. His team is yet to announce a replacement driver.

It is the third time in the past month the 42-year-old has wrecked in extracurricular races.

He was involved in a 15-car pile-up at Canandaigua Motorsports Park that sent a 19-year-old female driver to the hospital, and then rolled several times while fighting for the lead Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario, Canada a week ago.

He brushed off the severity of the latter incident on Friday at Pocono, saying: “You guys [the media] need to watch more sprint car videos and stuff. It’s starting to get annoying this week about that.

“That was just an average sprint car wreck. We’re just fine. If it’s bad, we’ll let you guys know.”

Seven years ago Stewart competed at Dover despite fracturing his right shoulder blade, using Ricky Rudd as his relief driver.
