Legge has landed the drive with the DeltaWing Racing Cars squad alongside Briton Andy Meyrick after a successful test in the experimental prototype at Road Atlanta on Sunday.
She takes the place of Olivier Pla, who is unavailable for Laguna on May 11 due to testing commitments with the OAK Racing World Endurance Championship squad.
DeltaWing team manager Dave Price said: “Most of the time we were doing engine work, but Katherine got on with it and didn’t make a fuss. She did a good job.”
Legge said: “It braked really well, it turned really positively and it was really fast in a straightline – it drove like a really good racing car. It was really neat to get it going.”
Price plans to test again at the team’s home track of Road Atlanta next week to give Legge further time in the car. A test scheduled for Wednesday (tomorrow) has now been cancelled.
“We are involved in what is really a development programme and we are trying to reconfigure the turbo side of things,” he explained. “That’s why we need some time before we run again.”
The 2013 version of the DeltaWing, which raced with a Nissan engine at last year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, is powered by a new engine developed by team owner Don Panoz’s Elan Motorsports Technologies organisation.
The DeltaWing team has yet to confirm drivers for the remainder of the ALMS season, over the course of which it will give a debut to the coupe version of the car unveiled in show form at Sebring in March.
