Chinese racer Sun Zheng is to contest the British Formula 3 International Series with CF Racing as the first protege of a new tie-up to promote the Asian country’s talent into European motorsport.
Sun, 21, will race a Dallara F308 powered by the traditional National Class Mugen Honda spec engine, with his first outing being the opening round at Silverstone on May 25/26.
He is the reigning champion in the junior-level China Formula Grand Prix series for Geely-engined Van Diemens, and took fourth place in last season’s Audi R8 LMS Cup.
Recent test outings have left the North Wales-based CF team optimistic that he will do a good job.
Team boss Hywel Lloyd, who raced with Adderly Fong in British F3 as part of the Sino Vision Racing team, said: “Testing’s gone quite well. He had his first test in the British F3 car at Rockingham, and we were quite pleased with the lap times.
“He’s done further test days at Anglesey and Silverstone, and he’s been getting quicker all the time.
“This is a new partnership with the KRC team at the Zhuhai circuit, who we’ve worked with since our Sino Vision days. They will send over drivers who they think are ready for Europe. It’s a good partnership that we’re looking to build on.”
CF is hoping to field a second car alongside Sun.
