Jann Mardenborough has been given a five-place grid penalty for the next British Formula 3 International Series round at Brands Hatch.
The Welshman, who will serve the penalty in the first race at Brands, was adjudged to have been at fault for the collision after the finish of the finale at Spa, where he ran into winner Antonio Giovinazzi.
Giovinazzi slowed to salute his team, and the unsighted Mardenborough could not avoid the Italian in time.
But Mardenborough accepted at least some culpability for driving too fast after the finish line – drivers had been told to slow so that they could turn into the paddock after the La Source hairpin, rather than continue around the circuit for a full slowdown lap.
“I crossed the line and kept it pinned, and Antonio was on a normal line,” he said. “I was in the spray and didn’t see him until the last second.”
Giovinazzi added: “I was so happy, driving close to the wall to see my team and my mechanics, and then after… boom!”
