Solberg seeking WRC comeback

Petter Solberg 2003 World Rally champion Petter Solberg is looking for a way back into the series next year.

The Norwegian stopped rallying last season, preferring to compete with his own team in the European Rallycross Championship when it became clear that there was no full-time factory WRC seat for him.

But Solberg will attend next weekend’s Rally Finland for meetings that he hopes will start a path back into the WRC.

“Nothing has changed in the way I feel about the sport,” said Solberg. “This will always be the special sport for me and I do feel I really have a lot to offer in the World Rally Championship.

“It’s true that I stopped before I was ready to stop, but now I am talking again and I want to see what I can make happen in time for next season.”

Having spent three seasons as a winless privateer, Solberg is only too aware of the need for a factory drive to win regularly.

“As much as I want to come back to the WRC,” Solberg added, “It has to be done absolutely properly.

“When I was talking about this season, I always said that I wanted the chance to win the championship and that meant doing all of the rallies.

“I know I still have the speed and it’s been frustrating as hell to sit on the sidelines and watch this year.”
