Hyundai calls its new HND-9 concept a “modern reinterpretation of the elegant image of a classic sports coupe.” We call it a pretty good barometer for where the design of the next-generation Genesis coupe is headed. The latest evolution of Hyundai’s oft-referenced fluidic sculpture design philosophy and the ninth vehicle to be penned at Hyundai’s Namyang R&D center, the HND-9 concept features a nearly horizontal rear end, origami-like exhaust finishers, a Focus ST–cribbed grille, and it keeps the two-door Genesis’s long-hood proportions. Don’t count on tomorrow’s Genesis coupes to come with the concept’s “butterfly” doors.

Powering the HND-9 concept is a direct-injected 3.3-liter turbocharged engine making use of an unspecified amount of cylinders and producting 365 horsepower. Power is routed to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. No additional details were revealed, but Hyundai says it will have more information when the concept makes its in-the-metal debut at the Seoul auto show at the end of the month.
