125th Street Riders: Bus Lanes Should Go All the Way to Morningside

None of the bus riders Streetsblog interviewed yesterday afternoon were happy that Bill Perkins had cowed the city into trimming its plan for bus lanes on 125th Street. Photo: Stephen Miller

Yesterday we reported that State Senator Bill Perkins’ office has finally expressed satisfaction with the 125th Street bus improvement project, now that DOT has watered it down by shortening the dedicated bus lanes. Previously,  Perkins had called on the city to “slow down” the plan to bring Select Bus Service to 125th Street due to what he claimed was insufficient community input, even though DOT and the MTA had been holding public workshops since last September. Streetsblog hit the streets yesterday afternoon to see what bus riders on 125th Street had to say about the situation.

None of the riders I talked to over the course of 45 minutes had heard about the plan to bring bus lanes to 125th Street, nor had they heard of Perkins’ “emergency” town hall meeting last week. They were all disappointed that, under pressure from Perkins, the city had decided to shorten the bus lanes by half, ending at Lenox Avenue instead of Morningside Avenue.

“I think they should go to Morningside,” Margaret Fernandez said while waiting for the bus at St. Nicholas Avenue.

Other bus riders agreed. “You need it all the way over,” Disney Aaron said. “It’d be better for people, man. Better for traffic, too.”

A major feature of the camera-enforced bus lanes is that they would cut down on illegal double-parking, which slows down buses stuck in traffic. Streetsblog spotted an NYPD officer ticketing a delivery truck that had parked in a bus stop on 125th Street at Frederick Douglass Boulevard. “It’s mostly double-parking. There’s plenty of it,” she said. “It causes so much traffic.”

Lorenzo pips Rossi as Marquez crashes

Jorge Lorenzo denied Valentino Rossi a home top spot in Mugello practice, as Marc Marquez escaped a violent accident.

Marquez, who had been fastest in the morning, lost control under braking at the end of a 200mph straight.

His Honda slid onto the wet grass lining the track and slammed to the ground before sliding into the gravel.

Marquez crawled away from the wreckage and was taken straight to the medical centre for checks.

Initial notification from race control was that the Spaniard had not sustained any serious injuries.

The accident was the worse part of a difficult session for Honda, which could only watch as rival Yamaha dominated.

Rossi and Lorenzo swapped first position relentlessly, in one of seven-time Mugello MotoGP race-winner Rossi’s strongest performances since rejoining Yamaha.

The home crowd will have to wait to see Rossi end a session on top, though, as Lorenzo snatched the place away in the closing moments with a 1m48.375s, 0.034 seconds faster than the sister M1.

Yamaha filled the top three positions, with Cal Crutchlow third for Tech 3.

In addition to Marquez’s accident, Crutchlow’s team-mate Bradley Smith also needed a trip to the medical centre following a violent crash. He is being assessed for a possible left arm injury.

Ducati had an encouraging session on home ground. Nicky Hayden was fourth, pushing championship leader Dani Pedrosa’s Honda back to fifth.

Hayden’s team-mates Andrea Dovizioso and Michele Pirro were seventh and 10th, but second-best Ducati was Pramac’s Andrea Iannone, who benefited from tailing Rossi on his way to sixth.

Aspar rider Randy de Puniet led the CRT pack in ninth place overall.

How do you feel about being back at Dover? “Good. Obviously, we ran a lot better here in the fall last year. So, it kind of gives us a little bit of encouragement. We got two very good teammates that this is probably one of their best race tracks. Be leaning on them quite a bit through practice today and tomorrow. Hopefully, we’ll improve our performance here from where we’ve been here in the past.”

Have things turned around for you at Dover? “I spent a lot of time studying last year in the last, really the week or two leading up to the Dover Chase race and obviously our performance was a ton better by getting the pole and really running top-three all day long. Hopefully, that was the turning point. We saw today in practice that we had some speed. We possibly could have turned the corner here. We’ll actually see the results on Sunday. But, I think that we’re narrowing our bad tracks to a very few here in the last couple years.”

How have you been so fast since returning from your injury? “I think a lot of it is — I knew that I was going to have to do what I needed to do to be better when I got back. Obviously, when you have some time off you can either rest and relax or you can go to work and figure out what you can do to be a better race car driver. I think I’m better now than I was beforehand. I think that’s helped our performance. I think our qualifying this year has been key to our results on race day. So, I think there’s been a lot of things that has helped us perform the way we have the last couple weeks. It’s almost too small of a sample size to draw a conclusion that we’re that strong. I think we get past here and in a few more weeks and we have all top-fives then I’d say that things are looking good for us.”

Did you study as much before your recent injury? “Well, I think that you’ve got to identify your weaknesses. I mean you’re not going to just get magically better at a place unless your crew chief magically hits a setup and you’re great. But, I think that the only way a crew chief is going to do that is if you give him the right information. I don’t know that I’ve given the right information throughout my career. So, I’ve worked on that information because I’ve now had another driver I could listen to talk to my crew chief and then saw what strides or struggles that they had during the race. And so I kind of would figure that out. The competition is so good now that you have to do everything you can to get an edge on anyone. So, I just try to go that extra mile.”

Is studying or being motivated more helpful? “I think that when you’re motivated like we are right now and knowing what we have to do to make the Chase, I think that helps. The qualifying, the studying — last week before qualifying — all those things help. Whether it’s a hundredth of a second here and there — you add it all up and you got something at the end that you can win with. So, I think that’s what we’ve done so far.”

How difficult is Pocono to get a good setup? “It’s one of the most challenging and really the hardest race track on our schedule before they paved it because of how bumpy it was and the multi-groove there and every corner was different. Now it’s just become one of those new asphalt, hard tire race tracks where track position is total key and you have to have the fastest car. Really, once you get out front there you can really do some work. It’s just been tougher to pass ever since they repaved and really just try to do your best and qualify as well there as you can because you know that your task will be pretty tough if you qualify bad there to get a good finish on Sunday.”

How long did it take for you to learn about the camera cable at Charlotte and what did you think of NASCAR’s reaction? “I think it was about a lap for me — for me, it was when they threw the caution that I knew. I didn’t feel anything hit my car until I got out and saw where it had hit my car. I think they did the only thing they could do. Obviously when they have an object that is part of the track that affects the race, it’s a new precedence letting guys fix their cars and taking a break to do that. I didn’t think much of it realistically because I didn’t know any of the facts about it or what had happened really until I watched the race back again. For us, it just hit the roof flap on our car and kind of bent it up in a bad position so we fixed that and it looked like everyone who had damage from it recovered well enough after it that it didn’t really affect them. I think that NASCAR did a good job. Now it’s set a new precedence though that if there is a track issue that causes damage then what are they going to do next time?”

Will you race more aggressively to try to make the Chase? “I think our only play is to be aggressive. I think that to come here and try to get a good points day is irrelevant because if we don’t win then we’re really not accomplishing much. Obviously, we still have to get inside the top-20, but I think we can do that over the course of the next 13 or 14 weeks. We’re going to need to win races so we’re going to do everything we can to try to get that. I’ll be as aggressive as I can so I’m treating this as more of an offensive race than a defensive one for sure.”

Do you and the team feel pressure to be perfect and win races? “I think we’re treating it as if it is Chase scenarios right now. I’m driving like it or even more aggressive than I would be if I was in the Chase. We’re going to have to capitalize on our money tracks. We’re going to have to win at those race tracks and sneak a few in here and there when we don’t expect it. We’re doing everything we can and if we come up short then we come up short, there’s nothing we’re going to be able to do about it. Right now I feel pretty good about where Joe Gibbs Racing as a whole is — we’re competitive, a little bit off on speed from my teammate, which I have to go to work on. I feel good about where we’re at and we just need to win everything we can.”

Does Kyle Busch’s position concern you if he falls out of the top-10? “Not really, I think that those guys are fast enough week in and week out to be in the top-10. Obviously, they are going to do everything they can and they don’t want to use a ‘wild card’ by any means. They want to use those wins, but right now things are going okay for us because those guys from 10th to 20th — knock on wood — haven’t won races yet, but they will. Especially at a couple tracks I’m thinking about coming up. We’ve got to do our job and we’re not going to prevent anybody from winning, there is nothing we can do about it. We just have to do the best job we can and hope that the frontrunners and all those top-10 guys that have wins stay in there. We’re rooting for them, that’s for sure.”

Has the new asphalt at Pocono taken an edge away for you and is Pocono a place you feel you are likely to win at? “It’s very well possible. We had a leg up, we had two legs up on everyone when we went there with the old pavement. I think now we’re better than average, but we’re not the best anymore at that track. But, it’s definitely a place that we have performed well. Even after it got paved we still performed pretty well. Yeah, it is a track I look forward to. We haven’t tested — Joe Gibbs Racing as a team — anywhere yet. We haven’t used any of our tests. We’re going to be looking forward here in the next summer months of trying to capitalize on some good tracks for us and winning at those. Pocono might be one of them, Michigan — something like that. Really for me, I think that when they changed the track and they paved it, it changed everything. It really was like a whole new race track. Same with Kansas and Michigan — all of these tracks, as soon as they pave them they took one track and they just really threw it out and you’ve got a whole other surface, new setups, new way of driving style every single time. I think that is the challenge for us. We’ve got to really learn that race track again.”

Are you concerned with about the engine issue Kyle Busch experienced last weekend at Charlotte? “It’s always a concern, but for me it’s not as much as it used to be. I know that obviously it was a scary moment for me when you see Kyle (Busch) blew up (at Charlotte) and you wonder what’s the next shoe to fall. Usually when one goes multiple go, but I think his was an isolated issue. We talked about it in our debrief on Monday — the specific problem that it was. I think it was a freak issue and the reason why it didn’t affect us or our teammate. It doesn’t really bother me honestly. I think that TRD (Toyota Racing Development) has really came a long way with their durability and obviously horsepower has been better this year, but we’ve got to continue to get better. We’re not going to be able to run the same horsepower and reliability at the end of the season as what we started. We’ve got to continue to get better because everyone else is. So, that’s at our forefront right now. I think with reliability even though it’s a concern it’s been a lot better this year than it’s been in the past.”

What does the autism cause mean to you? “Well, it’s been a special time. No one in my family has been affected by autism, but I know handfuls of people that autism affects their family. Really, the number has gone from one in 100 to one in 88 in just a decade and it’s going to get even more in the next decade. It’s a concern and there is no cure for it. We see people — TV personalities that it affects their family. Having a child with autism is a tough thing because there’s a lot of work that goes into it and a lot of money that it costs to have a child with autism. So, we’re trying to raise awareness for that and we played in the golf tournament yesterday that over the past 12 years has raised over $4.5 million. So, that’s a huge step in the research and development side of things. So, obviously we’re just trying to do our part in Fox’s last race to get that awareness out there for everyone to be aware of autism and do whatever you can to donate.”

Do you consider Kurt Busch and the 78 team a serious threat for a ‘wild card’ spot? “I think his (Kurt Busch) talent is as good as anyone’s for sure. He’s really taken that team to another level and I think the team has gotten better as well. But, yeah, it’s a concern, but there is nothing I can do about it. You see him out front and I’m watching — during the red flag I see he’s out front and I know he’s one of those in between guys that could hurt us. We’ve been, knock on wood, very fortunate. Martin Truex (Jr.) could’ve and should’ve won Texas. He’s one of those guys that’s in between that would’ve hurt us and luckily things worked out and it didn’t. Kurt several times, Juan (Pablo Montoya) at Richmond. There’s been a lot of bullets that we’ve dodged here and there, but eventually those guys are going to get those wins. We know that. So, we’ve just got to do our job and get multiple wins. If we do that then we’re going to control our own destiny. We just can’t hope to back our way into it.”

Production Honda makes test debut

Production Honda completes first test

Honda has completed the first test of its new MotoGP production racer, which it hopes to make available to teams before the end of 2013.

The machine will be offered to privateers as an alternative to CRT equipment from next year onwards.

Honda has not yet revealed any technical specifications, but it is understood the production racer will not incorporate Honda’s seamless gearbox technology.

Honda admitted its new machine has been running slightly behind schedule, but said it had outperformed expectations during a two-day private shakedown at Motegi.

“Development of the model is currently a little behind schedule but the test results showed more than what we had expected, in particular, with its running performance,” HRC vice president Shuhei Nakamoto said.

“We can’t announce its name or the specification at this stage but we will have an opportunity of announcing the details in the not too distant future.

“We will keep on developing the machine to meet the 2014 MotoGP technical and sporting regulations, and will introduce the model by the end of this year.”

Yamaha confirmed on the eve of this year’s Qatar opener that it would lease engines to customer teams from 2014.

The moves by Honda and Yamaha ensure both will be able to use their own software within the control ECU that will come into play in top-level grand prix racing in 2014.

ETC: 2013 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este dominated by Ralph Lauren's Bugatti [w/video]

On this past long weekend while Americans were celebrating Memorial Day, the very American Ralph Lauren was cleaning up tidily at this year's Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in northern Italy on the western shore of Lake Como. It rained the first day on and off and this lowered a little the spirits of the event, but Sunday was a knockout Day Two and, at any rate, nothing put the kibosh on Lauren's 1938 Bugatti winning nearly everything there was to win.

Nothing put the kibosh on Lauren's 1938 Bugatti winning nearly everything there was to win.

Here's the hardware the clothing magnate's $40-million-value Bugatti 57SC Atlantic hauled in: Trofeo BMW Group (this is a BMW Group-sponsored event since 1999) for best in show according to the Jury; Coppa d'Oro Villa d'Este for best in show according to the invited public and press; Trofeo BMW Group Italia for best in show according to the open public on Day Two; Trofeo BMW Group Ragazzi for best in show according to the younguns; best-in-class winner of Class B a.k.a. "Purosangue"; Trofeo Auto & Design special prize for most exciting design according to the Jury.

So, hats off to Mr. Lauren's sultry black French win-mobile. There are nine classes overall and besides the mondo Bugatti in Class B, the other eight were: a 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S torpedo roadster (Class A "Gentlefolk of the Road"); 1964 Ferrari 500 Superfast berlinetta (Class C "Time of Change"); 1962 Aston Martin DB4 SS saloon (Class D "Aston Martin" for the company centenary); 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB berlinetta (Class E "Cavallino contro Tridente" for Ferrari vs. Maserati); 1956 Jaguar XKSS spider (Class F "California Dreaming"); 1964 Ferrari 250 LM berlinetta (Class G "Style and Speed"); 1965 Lamborghini 350 GTS spider (Class H "Lamborghini" for the company 50th anniversary); 1965 Ferrari Dino 166P/206P spider (Class I "Racing Improves the Breed").

Huff fine to race after road crash

Rob HuffRob Huff will be fine to compete in next weekend’s World Touring Car visit to Russia after avoiding serious injury in a horrific road crash.

The accident, instigated by a drunk driver, happened last Friday in Newmarket.

Huff was on the other side of the road to the initial collision, but was collected as the three cars originally involved slewed across the road.

Two people had to be cut free from their cars, with one passenger suffering a punctured lung and broken ribs.

Huff said he only suffered minor injuries, and that his participation in Russia is therefore not in doubt. He was able to race as planned in the Masters Historic Festival at Brands Hatch, winning his event on Saturday.

“I’m pretty lucky really,” Huff told AUTOSPORT. “I’ve got a sore nose from headbutting the airbag, a few knocks and bruises, but nothing serious.

“It was one of those where I didn’t even know I had crashed – all I knew was that my Camaro had suddenly exploded around me.

“One car had broken down and was pulling off on the other side of the road, and a BMW slowed down behind. A red Golf came over the top of a hill and just ploughed through both of them and into me.

“It was like a plane crash – there was debris everywhere, even a rear axle with no wheels lying in the road.

“Everything was closed for four hours, the air ambulance came, they had to take the roof of two cars; it was really nasty.

“The driver of the golf was later found to be over the limit, which is just inexcusable.”

The WTCC makes its Russian debut next weekend on June 8-9.

Spy Shots: Updated Audi R8 GT caught testing

Audi R8 GT caught testing - front three-quarter view

When Audi introduced the refreshed 2014 R8, one of the first things we noticed was that the new R8 V10 Plus offers identical output to the outgoing R8 GT, suggesting that this limited-production model was either due to be cancelled or poised for a serious power increase. Fortunately, these spy shots have us suspecting that the latter is more likely.

Like the previous R8 GT, this new model will likely hit the gym, dropping some weight and packing more punch, but while that's all speculative, we do see that better handling is definitely in the cards. Aside from the aero-improving chin spoiler, fascia winglets and fixed rear wing, this R8 also has upgraded brakes with bigger calipers and what appear to be cross-drilled ceramic rotors. We hear output could be increased from the current 560 horsepower up closer to the 600-hp range, and laid to the pavement via Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system. It also very likely that Audi will keep production numbers for a 2014 R8 GT rather low, with the outgoing model limited to just 333 units globally.

Marquez to assess condition after crash

Marc Marquez MotoGP 2013Marc Marquez says he will assess his condition on Friday night after his ferocious crash in Mugello practice.

The Honda rider crashed at high-speed at the end of the main straight during the second session.

Although he had to be removed from the scene on a stretcher, Marquez was given a clean bill of health in the medical centre, having escaped serious injury.

“Just after the hill on the straight I grabbed for the brakes but I closed the front,” Marquez explained.

“I tried to save it but the bike was pulling me towards the wall so I jumped from the bike to avoid hitting it.

“I hit my chin hard and strained my neck quite badly, I also have some contusions to my right shoulder, arm and leg but other than that I’m OK.

“Thanks to all the medical team that were quickly on the scene to assist me. Now I need to rest and see how I feel later tonight and in the morning.”

The incident left Marquez 14th on the timesheets. His team-mate Dani Pedrosa was only fifth quickest, a second off the Yamahas’ lead pace.

Motorbase completes third Focus run

Motorbase completes third Focus runBritish Touring Car squad Motorbase ran its third NGTC Ford Focus at Snetterton yesterday and hopes to race it in the championship soon.

The squad’s British GT champion Michael Caine, who had originally been entered to race in the 2013 BTCC, drove the car.

Although Caine is now unlikely to race the NGTC machine, team boss David Bartrum still hopes to run it alongside regular drivers Mat Jackson and Aron Smith during the season.

“Due to the pressure of British GT and work commitments, Michael won’t be doing the BTCC,” Bartrum told AUTOSPORT.

“Ideally, we’d like to run it in the second half of the season, but we haven’t got a driver yet.”

Bartrum also believes the team is making progress with the Focuses after a difficult start to 2013.

“We’ve had some technical issues not of our own making and we also missed a few things,” he added.

“Now we’ve made massive steps forward with it.”

Name That Shifter, No. 130: 1962 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Coupe

Name That Shifter

1962 Mercedes-Benz 220SE

Shifter No. 130

On Tuesday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. Almost everyone seemed to find this week’s shifter difficult to identify, but commenter Ali G. cracked the case with his guess that the stick belongs to a Mercedes-Benz 220SE. Ali G. will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.

The 220SE pictured here is from our August 1962 issue. Introduced as a sporty take on the W111-body Benzes, the 220SE came with a floor-mounted four-speed manual transmission, a stiffly sprung suspension, and—believe it or not—manual steering. The coupe’s somewhat porky curb weight meant the 134-hp 2.2-liter inline-six was slightly taxed, and the 0–60 mph run took a relaxed 12.7 seconds.

Suspension failure caused Massa’s crash

Suspension failure caused Massa's crashFerrari has revealed that Felipe Massa’s crash in the Monaco Grand Prix was caused by suspension failure.

Massa crashed out at Sainte Devote on lap 29, smashing into the barriers on the left-hand side of the track and then spinning further down the road before a second impact.

The Brazilian was taken to hospital for precautionary checks on his neck, but was released later than evening and returned home.

Although the accident appeared identical to his one in free practice on Saturday, which was caused by driver error, Ferrari technical chief Pat Fry confirmed after the race that the second shunt was caused by an unspecified mechanical problem.

Following detailed investigations by the team, a statement issued by Ferrari said: “The findings validated the first impressions of the engineers, confirming that the accident was caused by an element of the front left suspension breaking.

“With all the required inspections completed to analyse what happened at the Monegasque circuit, the car assembly department can now start work in preparing the car for the Canadian Grand Prix.”

Ferrari also said that Massa had been given the all-clear to race in Montreal, and will be allowed a few days’ rest in Monaco this week to help recover.

Team principal Stefano Domenicali said: “The best news to come out of the Monaco weekend is that Felipe is fine.

“Two big accidents, just over twenty four hours apart and all he has to show for it is a bit of muscle pain. Fortunately there were no other injuries.”

Panther, Hildebrand part company

Panther parts company with HildebrandPanther Racing and JR Hildebrand have parted company with immediate effect, the IndyCar team announced on Thursday.

Hildebrand, the Indy Lights champion in 2009, made 37 starts for the team during the past three seasons, finishing second after a last-corner crash while leading in the 2011 Indianapolis 500.

The 25-year-old Californian crashed out of this year’s race on lap four last Sunday.

Hildebrand is currently 19th in the IndyCar standings with a fifth-place finish at Long Beach as his best result.

Panther said the decision to part ways was mutual.

“We’d like to thank JR Hildebrand for his contributions to Panther Racing, and especially the work he put into supporting the National Guard and all of our programs to support its soldiers,” Panther managing partner John Barnes said.

“JR is a great young man, a class act, and somebody who has been a great representative of our race team and all of our partners since 2011. We certainly wish JR, his family and his representatives all the best in the future.”

Hildebrand added: “I want to thank Panther Racing for the opportunity to drive the No. 4 National Guard Chevrolet. It was a privilege to represent our men and women in uniform, along with the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe and the team’s veteran employment initiatives.

“I’m very much looking forward to the next chapter in my IndyCar career, and wish all my friends at Panther the absolute best.”

Panther said it plans to announce Hildebrand’s replacement for this weekend’s race at Detroit later today.

Oriol Servia, left without a drive after Indianapolis following Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s decision to withdraw from the series, has been linked with the drive.

You’d think truck makers would be throwing a veritable conniption, what with gas prices being what they are and the concept of vehicle downsizing seemingly taking hold. Yeah, right—big-time pickup makers have it the other way around, acting more like the folks lining up to slap the famously panicked passenger in the movie Airplane! out of it. Instead of clubs, a gun, or even a nun, players like Ram and Ford are coolly wielding technologies to maximize fuel economy and add carlike refinement. READ MORE ››

Vauxhall Dives Into GM Product Bin and Comes Up with 576-hp VXR8 GTS Sedan

2014 Vauxhall VXR8 GTS

Concerned that U.K. residents didn’t have enough 500-plus-horsepower sedans from which to choose, GM’s Vauxhall brand today began taking orders for the 576-hp, LSA-powered VXR8 GTS.  Based on the same Aussie-market Holden HSV GEN-F GTS as the forthcoming 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan, Vauxhall, GM’s U.K. subsidiary, took a turn at raiding the global product roster and came up with a monster-motored four-door to call its own. The “on-the-road” price for all this bi-continental goodness is £54,999, or about $86,000 in U.S. currency.

By dropping the same supercharged, 6.2-liter LSA V-8 that powers the Camaro ZL-1 behind the VXR8’s new twin-nostril fascia, Vauxhall’s latest VXR8 now becomes the “least expensive membership in the 500-horsepower club.”  With the aforementioned 576 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque at hand, the 2014 VXR8 GTS improves on the outgoing LS3-powered VXR8′s numbers by 150 and 140, respectively. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, a six-speed automatic is optional. And although performance figures for the new version haven’t been released yet, Vauxhall would like to point out that the previous VXR8 achieved a 0–60-mph time of 4.9 seconds and arrived at the limited top speed of 155 mph rather easily.

In addition to the new fascia—which was created in part to supply enough air to cool the LSA V-8—the VXR8 GTS gets distinctive LED taillamps, quad exhaust outlets finished in shadow chrome, as well as a bespoke spoiler to help differentiate it from mere mortal VXR8s. Forged-aluminum six-piston calipers clamp two-piece rotors. The GTS rolls on 20-inch “Blade” forged-aluminum wheels wearing 255/35 (front) and 275/35 (rear) tires.

Standard in the VXR8 GTS are new, eight-way power adjustable and heated VXR performance seats covered in Onyx leather. An upgraded instrument panel with new cluster gauges, a revised center console, and new door trim help keep up appearances inside.

The majority of performance and safety systems and associated hardware were plucked directly from GM’s current A-list: brake torque vectoring and stability control, Magnetic Ride Control, traction control, launch control (manual-transmission models only), park assist, blind-zone alert, forward-collision alert, and a head-up display.

Unlike Ford, which recently announced the closing of its Australian manufacturing facilities, GM’s Holden presence should be safe as long as it continues to inspire and assemble cars like the VXR8 GTS and the new Chevy SS.

Jimmie Johnson – Nothing Else Matters

2013 NSCS No. 48 Lowe’s Monsters University Chevrolet SS Hood
2013 NSCS No. 48 Lowe’s Monsters University Chevrolet SS Hood
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (May 29, 2013) – “So close no matter how far. Couldn’t be much more from the heart. Forever trust in who we are and nothing else matters.” Metallica’s lyrics seem fitting this weekend for Jimmie Johnson as he heads to Dover (Del.) International Speedway for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.

There are a lot of good things going on for the five-time champion at the track, including a special paint scheme touting the new animated movie “Monsters University,” a scheme he says his daughter Evie is looking forward to. He’s not too bad getting around the concrete mile oval, either. He is currently the winningest active driver at the track and has a shot at becoming the all-time winningest driver with a victory Sunday. But fun paint schemes and historic records pale in comparison to what Johnson will do Thursday when he is scheduled to visit tornado-ravaged Oklahoma to distribute relief supplies at the Lowe’s store in Moore.

Suddenly those lyrics take on a whole meaning because, when it comes to helping those in need, truly “nothing else matters.”

  • As part of the $1 million pledge, Lowe’s donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross and matched  the earnings of Johnson from Sunday’s NASCAR race at Charlotte Motor Speedway with an additional donation to the Red Cross. Lowe’s will use the remainder of its $1 million commitment to fund local projects in areas of greatest need as identified by its national nonprofit partners.
  • Johnson and his wife, Chandra, who is from Muskogee, Okla., have pledged Johnson’s winnings from Sunday’s race  to go to disaster relief as well. That amount totaled nearly $148,000.

Johnson’s Dover and Season Quick Stats:

  • Seven wins (June and September 2002, September 2005, June and September 2009, September 2010 and June 2012).
  • Three poles (September 2009 and 2010, June 2011).
  • 11 top-five finishes (50 percent) and 16 top-10s (72.7 percent) in 22 starts.
  • Two DNFs (did not finish – June 2003 and 2004).
  • Average start of 9.7 and average finish of 8.6.
  • Completed 8,619 of 8,804 laps (97.9 percent) and led 2,318.
  • Sprint Cup’s best driver rating (120.6 average of a possible 150 points).
  • Sprint Cup’s best average running position (7.0).
  • Sprint Cup’s best in fastest laps run (878).
  • Sprint Cup’s most laps in the top-15 with 5,570 (87 percent).
  • Sprint Cup’s best average green-flag speed – 143.988 mph.
  • In 12 Sprint Cup races run this season, Johnson has finished in the top-five six times.
  • With a win Sunday, Johnson would surpass Richard Petty and Bobby Allison on the all-time win list at Dover. The three are currently tied with seven victories each. Johnson is the only active driver with seven wins at the Monster Mile.

Driver, Team and Sponsor Notes

  • Johnson will drive the No. 48 Lowe’s Monsters University Chevrolet SS Sunday at Dover. In addition, Johnson will make a special race day appearance at 10:15 a.m. EDT Sunday. The five-time champion will help kids in attendance assemble the “Monsters University” Build and Grow cars and host a kids-oriented question-and-answer session. All children are welcome.

Ø  Characters from Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University,” which opens in theatres June 21 in 3D, will grace the hood of Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet SS at Dover. The familiar characters of Mike and Sulley will be riding with Johnson in a special paint scheme to help kick off Lowe’s special Disney-themed Build and Grow clinics, which will be offered at Lowe’s stores throughout the summer.

Ø  Kids attending the Dover races Friday through Sunday will have an opportunity to get involved by visiting the Monsters University Admissions Tent. Kids will get a Monsters University Student ID badge for an opportunity to assemble a special-edition Lowe’s Build and Grow project of Johnson’s “Monsters University” racecar. The display will be located in the Dover Fan Zone.

Ø  As part of Lowe’s Build and Grow program, Disney and Lowe’s have teamed up to offer families a summer of do-it-yourself fun.Beginning June 8, Lowe’s stores nationwide will hold free movie-themed Build and Grow clinics, featuring projects from Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University,” Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story” and Disney’s “Planes.”

Ø  For more information and to register for the Disney-themed clinics, visit Lowe’s Build and Grow page atwww.lowes.com/buildandgrow.

  • Johnson drew the final two charities for the Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope program Saturday at Charlotte. Humane Society of Charlotte and Encompass join Against Abuse, Inc., Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Chelsea’s Hope, Me Fine Foundation, Denver Kids, Inc., Miracle League of Pensacola, International FOP Association, Inc., Ruth’s Reusable Resources, Peach’s Neet Feet and MISS Foundation

Ø  This year’s campaign began April 12 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth and culminated last weekend at Charlotte. Johnson has drawn two charities each week for a total of 13 charities. At the kickoff announcement,Make-A-Wish Iowa was selected.

Ø  The Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope program, which began in 2008, allows fans, consumers and media members across the country to nominate their favorite charity to receive a $10,000 grant, a Blue Bunny ice cream party, and special recognition on Johnson’s race helmet.

Ø  To date, the program has contributed more than $430,000 to 61 different charities.

JIMMIE JOHNSON, Driver of the No. 48 Lowe’s “Monsters University” Chevrolet SS for Hendrick Motorsports:

www.twitter.com/jimmiejohnson, www.twitter.com/lowesracing and www.twitter.com/teamhendrick

You have a special paint scheme this weekend that you will be running at Dover. What are your thoughts about it?

“We have the Monsters University movie, we’re promoting the movie, and it will be on our racecar this weekend at the Monster Mile. So excited to have a fun car. I know my daughter has enjoyed the rendering of the car and my helmet and all that goes with it. We had a lot of good luck last year with Madagascar on the car, and I hope that this one will bring us some more luck, as well.”

You are tied for all‑time wins at seven tracks on the Sprint Cup schedule. Are those records on your radar at all?

They are now. When you said seven, I had no idea I had that opportunity or that honor taking place. That’s mind‑boggling to me. I knew of the Charlotte stuff and I knew about Dover and Martinsville, but I didn’t know about the others. I’m extremely proud of that. I’ve worked hard to put myself in this position and so does the team, and we’ve been able to capitalize on those opportunities and hard work and get stuff done, so I’m really excited about that.”

Do you feel as good about things right now as your points lead would indicate your team is that good?

No, I mean, I feel good about things. We’ve got a huge points lead and we’ve had the wins and there have been tracks that we’ve been really hot at. But I feel like our mile‑and‑a‑half stuff we’ve been really a top-five car. Our short-track stuff and superspeedway stuff we’ve been a winning car. With the mile-and-a-half tracks occupying so much of the year, and especially the Chase, we have a little bit of room for improvement there. I do feel very good about our cars and don’t want to undermine that. But the points lead is huge, and I’d love to keep it that way and roll into Richmond or the races before Richmond with that kind of points lead so we can lock in.”

Williams appoints new CEO

Williams FW35 F1 2013Williams has announced its CEO Alex Burns is leaving the team with immediate effect and will be replaced by Mike O’Driscoll.

Burns had taken the position in 2010, when Frank Williams handed day-to-day control of the squad to former chief operating officer Adam Parr.

O’Driscoll, a former managing director of Jaguar Cars, has been appointed Group CEO – a newly-created role – “to guide the long-term future” of the team.

The new role means the F1 Team and Williams Advanced Engineering will be united under one management structure.

O’Driscoll will lead the executive committee and will report to Frank Williams and the board.

“Mike has been a valued member of our Board since 2011 as a Non-Executive Director and I am delighted that his day to day involvement in the company is to significantly increase,” said Williams.

“This new role strengthens the company and will help us achieve our goals both on the race track and in diversification.

“Mike brings with him significant skills and a wealth of experience. Working with Claire, I am in no doubt that the future of Williams is in safe hands.”

O’Driscoll added: “I am honoured that the Board has entrusted me with the position of Group CEO.

“I have been proud to serve as a non-executive director since 2011 and in my new role, I am very much looking forward to helping Sir Frank and Claire achieve the ambitious goals we have set ourselves.”

Report: NHTSA launching autonomous car study, guidelines

Google's self-driving Toyota Prius in city traffic

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has decided it's time to step back into the regulatory driver's seat, this time to outline the way forward for autonomous vehicles. Cars with partial self-driving capability are expected to arrive by 2020, and it's said that vehicles that can shuttle you around with any driver inputs should be here by 2025. In the interest of keeping everyone safe and ushering in a coherent state-by-state framework, NHTSA is planning a four-year initial research program that look at all the ways in which autonomous and partially autonomous technologies can have an impact on safety. According to USA Today, NHTSA is recommending that states authorize "operation of self-driving vehicles, for test purposes," something that isn't even a given across all 50 states yet.

In addition, NHTSA is interested in peripheral active safety features, including safety monitors that help cars stay in their lanes or brake assist systems that slow cars automatically in the case of an imminent collision, and it will be looking at whether these kinds of driving aids should be mandatory.

NHTSA launching autonomous car study, guidelines originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 30 May 2013 14:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Monaco race quotes: Pirelli

Paul Hembery: “Once again, we saw a Monaco Grand Prix where safety cars and a red flag played a prominent role. This had a defining effect on strategy, effectively meaning that all the careful pre-race planning went out of the window. Nonetheless, we experienced the expected low levels of tyre wear and degradation: in fact the race leader went one lap longer this year during his first stint on the super-soft compared to last year, even though the compounds are generally softer. After the race was stopped, most drivers chose to restart on used super-softs, having to make them last for 32 laps for the finish – although they were certainly helped by a second safety car period.

“Congratulations to Nico Rosberg and Mercedes, who dominated every session and led an action-packed grand prix from start to finish. We also saw some great performances lower down the field from drivers who used their tyres and strategy to very good effect, despite the extremely unpredictable race circumstances.”

To Reach 10,000 Bikes, DOT Looks to Sponsorships, Sandy Recovery Loan

With 6,000 bicycles, New York’s bike-share program is already the largest in the country. In fact, immediately after launching, Citi Bike proceeded to eclipse the national daily ridership record (previously held by Capital Bikeshare), with 12,000 trips in 24 hours. Ridership should grow steadily as more people start using the bikes and the network expands, but how quickly will Citi Bike grow beyond the initial service area? Appearing on the Brian Lehrer Show this morning, Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan discussed how the city intends to land the funds to implement the original plan for a 10,000-bike system.

The winning bid from system operator Alta Bicycle Share in 2011 envisioned a 10,000-bike/600-station system, but after Hurricane Sandy flooded a bike-share warehouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the damage limited what could be built with available funds to 7,000 bikes at 420 stations. About 100 of those stations have yet to come online; the city plans to add them before the end of the year.

The city also still intends to ramp up to a 10,000-bike system. Making up for the damage from Sandy is no small challenge, however, especially since the city has emphasized that Citi Bike, unlike most other bike-share programs, will not receive any taxpayer money.

At the end of the interview with Lehrer, Sadik-Khan said that DOT would be looking at Sandy recovery loans and additional sponsorships to expand the system to more neighborhoods. ”We’re continuing to work with sponsors on that, and we’re continuing to work with the Small Business Administration on a loan to make up for the bikes that were lost during Sandy,” she said.

New York would not be the first city to receive an SBA loan for bike-share, though it would probably be the first to apply disaster recovery funds. In Chicago, SBA provided a $350,000 loan to a 100-bike program operated by B-cycle, which is now closed and being replaced by the larger, Alta-operated Divvy bike-share program this summer.

Munoz still focused on Lights title

Carlos Munoz Indianapolis 500 runner-up Carlos Munoz says the Indy Lights title is still his priority for 2013 despite his spectacular IndyCar debut.

Driving a fifth car for Andretti Autosport, the 21-year-old Colombian qualified and finished second, beating his four team-mates, who include reigning champion Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Munoz currently leads the Indy Lights standings by 27 points, having won two of this season’s four races so far, driving for Andretti’s junior arm.

“Right now, let’s wait to see how the future will work for me,” said Munoz.

“Right now I’m thinking Indy Lights. I have to do my job and my job is that I’m still Indy Lights championship leader.

“This was my main goal since I started the year. [Indy] was one race more to have more experience and it came out really good, I think better than expected.”

He admitted to feeling some disappointment at not having a chance to try to pass Tony Kanaan for victory when a yellow came out on the penultimate lap.

“I really wanted to fight for the win. Maybe I could win, maybe not, but I really wanted to fight,” Munoz said.

“I have nothing to be ashamed of. To be second and a rookie is a great job.”

Tappy to contest Blancpain series

Tappy to contest Blancpain seriesBriton Duncan Tappy will contest the remainder of the Blancpain Endurance Series with the Nurburgring 24 Hours-winning Black Falcon Mercedes team.

Tappy, who is also competing in the British GT Championship with the Von Racing McLaren squad, will race a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG with fellow Briton Oliver Morley and Ukrainian Andrii Leded, starting next weekend at Silverstone.

The deal follows British GT graduate Morley’s decision to move up from the Pro-Am Cup class from the all-amateur Gentlemen Trophy category.

Tappy, who was Pro-Am class winner last year with the ART McLaren team, said: “I’m delighted to be joining Black Falcon for the remainder of the Blancpain and hope I can help them to build on their already impressive record of success.

“It’s great to get a second programme for the season, which was always my goal, and to be able to show my talents to another manufacturer.”

Morley, who won Pro-Am class at the Nurburgring in 2012 with Black Falcon, said: “I was offered the chance to run in the Gentlemen Trophy this year, but we weren’t at the sharp end at Monza [last month's season opener] and it didn’t do anything for me.

“That’s why I wanted to move back to Pro-Am. Duncan was someone I met last year when he was racing the ART McLaren and I’m excited to be able to put him in the car.”

Williams to use Mercedes engines

Mercedes engineWilliams has confirmed it will switch to Mercedes engines next season in what it describes as a “long-term” partnership.

The team has been powered by Renault since changing from Cosworth units at the start of the 2012 season, but has opted to do a deal with the German manufacturer for the new 1.6-litre V6 turbo era.

The announcement is the latest in a flurry of moves in the F1 engine market for 2014, with teams rushing to tie up supply deals.

As part of the deal, Mercedes will supply all associated energy recovery systems for the power unit, although Williams will continue to design and produce its own transmission.

“I’m delighted to announce our new association with Mercedes-Benz for the 2014 Formula 1 season and beyond,” said team principal Frank Williams.

“Mercedes-Benz has been one of the sport’s most successful engine suppliers and we believe that they will have an extremely competitive engine package.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Renault for their continued hard work since we renewed our engine partnership at the beginning of the 2012 season.

“We have enjoyed a strong relationship that has resulted in much success over the years, including powering us to winning ways once again last year at the Spanish Grand Prix.”

Deputy team principal Claire Williams believes that the Mercedes engine deal is crucial for the future success of the team.

“The announcement of this partnership is exciting news for Williams,” she said.

“Securing the right engine supply partnership is a key milestone in the implementation of our strategy for long-term success.

“We are also pleased to conclude this agreement early in the season and we very much look forward to working with Mercedes in developing our 2014 race car.”

Renault has only confirmed two engine supply deals for next year, announcing in Monaco that Scuderia Toro Rosso would be switching from Ferrari.

It will also continue to supply Caterham, although an official announcement has yet to be made.

Speaking in Monaco, Renault president Carlos Ghosn confirmed that three partner teams is its minimum, although there could be more deals for next year with Lotus known to be in talks with it.

“We need three teams, this is the minimum,” said Ghosn.

“We would not be surprised that a third one will come soon and we may have more, but we don’t need more.

“We may have four, we may have up to five teams but this is more a question of opportunity than necessity.”

WILLIAMS ENGINE HISTORY

Williams has chopped and changed its engine supplier more than any other team over the past decade.

BMW (2000-2005)

Anglo-German alliance yielded 10 victories and almost the 2003 world championship. Partnership came to an end when BMW wanted to get involved in team ownership, which was not possible with Williams, leading to it buying Sauber.

COSWORTH (2006)

Much was expected of the high-revving Cosworth powerplant at the start of the 2.4-litre V8 era, but the season was bitterly disappointing. Williams managed only 11 points and eighth in the constructors’ championship.

TOYOTA (2007-2009)

There were moments of promise for the partnership, notably fourth place (after McLaren’s exclusion) in the 2007 constructors’ standings. But there were only three podiums, and no victories, in three years together.

COSWORTH (2010-2011)

Nico Hulkenberg’s sensational pole position at Interlagos in 2010 was the high point for this renewed alliance, but the 2011 season was the worst since Williams Grand Prix Engineering’s first season running March chassis in 1977.

RENAULT (2012-2013)

Renault power was widely hailed as one of the key reasons for Pastor Maldonado being able to end the team’s win drought last year. But Williams has slumped this season and has yet to score a point in six races.
