Huff fine to race after road crash

Rob HuffRob Huff will be fine to compete in next weekend’s World Touring Car visit to Russia after avoiding serious injury in a horrific road crash.

The accident, instigated by a drunk driver, happened last Friday in Newmarket.

Huff was on the other side of the road to the initial collision, but was collected as the three cars originally involved slewed across the road.

Two people had to be cut free from their cars, with one passenger suffering a punctured lung and broken ribs.

Huff said he only suffered minor injuries, and that his participation in Russia is therefore not in doubt. He was able to race as planned in the Masters Historic Festival at Brands Hatch, winning his event on Saturday.

“I’m pretty lucky really,” Huff told AUTOSPORT. “I’ve got a sore nose from headbutting the airbag, a few knocks and bruises, but nothing serious.

“It was one of those where I didn’t even know I had crashed – all I knew was that my Camaro had suddenly exploded around me.

“One car had broken down and was pulling off on the other side of the road, and a BMW slowed down behind. A red Golf came over the top of a hill and just ploughed through both of them and into me.

“It was like a plane crash – there was debris everywhere, even a rear axle with no wheels lying in the road.

“Everything was closed for four hours, the air ambulance came, they had to take the roof of two cars; it was really nasty.

“The driver of the golf was later found to be over the limit, which is just inexcusable.”

The WTCC makes its Russian debut next weekend on June 8-9.
