Sebastien Ogier proved his class by beating Sebastien Loeb to come home 13th in the Porsche Supercup event in Monaco, reckons Volkswagen team director Jost Capito.
Ogier was making a guest appearance in the series with the Project 1 team, while Loeb was contesting his second round as a part of a season of multi-discipline racing.
It was Ogier who prevailed in the fight between the arch World Rally rivals, as he beat Loeb in qualifying and the race – the seven-time champion coming home 16th overall.
“Sebastien performed brilliantly, especially given his lack of experience on a racetrack,” Capito said.
“That just goes to show his driving class and I would like to compliment him on his race.”
Ogier admitted he had found it difficult to overtake on the street circuit, but described the outing as a ‘dream fulfilled’.
He also passed on his thanks to dominant victor and championship leader Sean Edwards, who had passed on advice before Ogier’s series debut.
“It was very special for me to experience Monaco from a non-rallying perspective,” Ogier said.
“Congratulations to Sean Edwards, who drove a sensational race and gave me some valuable tips beforehand.
“I had a good race and was able to make up a place shortly after the start.
“My best lap times were not far off those of Sean – not bad really, when you consider that I only had half a day to practice in the Porsche.
“I tried to fight my way through the field, but it is really almost impossible to overtake in Monaco.”
The next round of the WRC, the Acropolis Rally, takes place this weekend.
